Oil screen removal

HELP! Before it gets dark please? I'm in the middle of some maintenance and thought it would be wise to remove the oil sump screen and clean it. How is this accomplished? Waiting...THANKS!!!

It comes off similar to a plastic coffee can lid. If the rubber on the outside of the screen is hardened from age and you find that you have to fight with getting it off don't do it till you can order a replacement screen because the rubber on the outside of the screen will most likely break apart during removal. You can order the replacement screen from Honda. It is fairly inexpensive.

Thanks Dave, I'll try pulling it down and off as I'll have to order one tomorrow if it breaks anyway. I'd like to button her up tonight if possible.

Well, for the 28 or so who viewed this post and didn't reply, the screen does in fact pull off to the bottom. The rubber? ring around the screen is as hard as a rock and I cannot get it back on. I'll try Honda tomorrow and see if one is available. Hopefully it will be pliable enough to get back on (not much room to work down there). BTW, I also need some top fork caps, the ones with the huge allen head on them (anyone know how to remove one with the allen edges rounded) and a side cap for the engine, where an oil gauge was mounted. It cracked when I reinstalled it after taking off the gauge. Anyone know if these are available? Oh yeah, (in) the oil pan I found the remnants of a piece of plastic? that (was) a ring of some kind, about the size of en eyelit on a boot. It was just laying in the left rear corner of the pan in four pieces. What (was) that thing? The screen was a bit dirty BTW, had a bunch of old gasket? goo hanging from it. Clean now and impossible to replace. Hopefully I can get a new one from Honda. There goes another day spent wrenching instead of riding...

There are several different styles of easy-outs available and I'm sure if you get the right one it will remove the fork caps. Some are real short and just twist in and the harder you twist them the harder they bite in. They range in price from cheap to Mac or Snap-On quality. These usually come in sets with several different sizes in each set. Honda should be able to order you a rubber retained for your oil screen. If you have a problem send me a E-mail as I have a new rubber and screen in stock for such times. There is no charge just replace the parts when you can.

Thanks a bunch Tom, and Mark and Pete and Dave. Damn fine bunch of guys around here! I'll call my Honda dealer in the morning and let you know what is still available. If they can get them, I'll have them by Friday.
