tire changing

Post by peter chechotko »

i have been up till this point. leary of the dreaded tire change. no longer. after reading a short article in a bike mag. i trumphed. first aquire three, decent tire irons, second use windex spray for lube at all parts of the process. deflate, remove valve core. attach two to three c clamps, mid side wall. this compresses, breaks bead. and holds bead to centre of rim, to allow slack, on other side, for removal. instal went in reverse order. very quick. removed old metzlers, in 30 min. first try. new avons went on quick too. used ratchet strap to comp. tire to seal bead, lots of spray to let bead slide. two trys on rear at 80 lb s. but it went. balancing, i will try the dyna bead nock off sold by white horse press..wahoo try it.

Sorry, but no. I have a shop that mounts and balances for free with the wheel off and only $25 with it on, as long as you buy the tires from them. Hard to beat that deal.

Depends on what they charge you for the tires . . . . .

True enough but if they charged too much I wouldn't buy them.

My problems in the past is that I do not trust anyone with my rims I'm afraid. I have seen many a rim butchered by a tire jockey for me not to go that route. However, I'm sure there are "technicians" out there worthy of merit, it's just that I haven't found them yet... :?

I know exactly what you are saying, Larry. I am mounting the tires on my magnesium Marchesinis and the composite Dymags myself and have a shop balance them (with glued-on weights). I prefer to stand next to the mechanic when he does it.

That's make three. I change all my own tires and use Dyna Beads for balancing. Added to my tire changing enjoyment for the bike I have now is the addition of tubes. Pinched a few but getting better.

Shop here quoted $80 to change out a tire if you brought in the bike. That's robbery IMO. The tire cost less.

just a quick update , from my last comments. my avon shod, 79, developed a bad shake with, slightly less than 2 ounces of dyna beads in the front. i again removed the tire vacumed them out and re instaled. 10 - 15 min. this time , getting faster, and fresh rubber seems to be easier to work. anyway. the avon minus beads , no shake now. i also think the avon turns in quicker than the metzler. yes i would buy avon venoms again. good riding.

Good to hear the shake cleared up, Peter.
Just to confirm, it was the Avon Venom, not the Storm or RoadRider that you had mounted on the '79?

I had the shakes too....
After spending 1000's of dollars over the winter break, my bike handled like chit...
Hmmmm I thought, maybe, just maybe it's an issue with fork damping...Went to a higher viscosity on my forks & it just fell into place.......Sweet riding. 8)
