J.I.S. Screw drivers

Post by Houtman »

As you might or might NOT know the phillips screws on Japanese bikes have a slighty different cross head than ours.
The flutes are more straight to prevent cam out.It is therefor worth buying the Japanese Industrial Standard screw drivers .
This will prevent damaging the screws.I bought a set on Amazon last year(Hozan) they are quite good but recently I
bought the better Vessel ones from Mc Master Carr.I also got some Drive Grip,an anti cam out fluid but have not yet to
need it.Restoring a bikes is so much less frustrating if if you have the right tools !Safe Riding.

I, also, find that, anywhere possible, it is best to use an impact driver with phillips head screws. Especially, larger the screws retaining significant parts -- even cam cover end-caps, etc. Does tend to help considerably to prevent camming out of the blade and associated slot distortion.

I like the Vessel ones also. The handles feel better. And they do fit and grip better.

Last year I began a quest to get a set of the JIS drivers. Not one of the local tool suppliers had any knowledge of them, including the Snap-On supplier.

I still haven't got a set, but would like both hand driver and impact driver sets. Any suggestions as to a source?

Either garage is too small or we have too many bikes. Or Momma's car needs to go outside.

For the larger# 3 you might have to go to Mcmaster Carr, some of the other sites only have the smaller ones. The Mc Master Carr catalog is a great source of info.
