Oil leak

Post by Pete Wittstruck »

Today I found an oil leak on my '82 CBX. After all the crap I've given to my Harley riding friends, I've got an oil leak! It appears to be coming from the front cam chain adjuster bolt/lock nut. Is there a gasket or seal there that needs to be replaced?

Oil leak @ front adjuster bolt.........

Post by sr71cbx »

Hey Pete,
There's a cute little o-ring on the bolt under the locknut that's supposed to seal it up,it's probably hardened up by now.If you use a little bit of black silicone seal under the locknut, after cleaning it off with contact cleaner,it should seal right up. :D
See you @ DV2003!! 8)

I just had mine off because of the same thing.

The lock nut has a rubber insert in it that (in both our cases) USED to seal between the adjusting bolt and the mounting boss.

I just thoroughly cleaned the bolt and nut with brake cleaner, then used Permatex thread sealant on the bolt and nut before reassembling and wiping off the excess.

A cooler way to go would be to replace the locknut with a new one from Honda, if it's still available.

Are there any issues or special procedures when removing the bolt/nut while the engine is off. My service manual indicates the adjustment is made while the engine is idling. Can I just remove, clean and apply the sealant while the engine is off and cold?

Pete, since that's the cam chain adjustment, you will be loosening it once in a while, and you'll be doing the sealant thing over and over. Buy the O-ring from Honda, and it be good for another 20 years. Word of caution....it's very easy to overtighten that nut and pull the adjusting screw out of the head, threads and all. If you want to adjust your chain correctly, buy a new rubber plug from Honda while you're at it and follow the procedure in the Tech Tips. Eric

Eric, I had a some assorted "o" rings laying around so I made a temporary fix. I also went down to my local dealer and ordered a few of the special seals. If they're good for 20 years I now have a 60 year supply coming.

It was good to see you at Rod's for the couch racing and chilli. I hope to see you in DV, even if your riding your Buick!
