Dave this has got me thinking so I went out to my garage and went through some new NGK's I had laying around.

The plug on the left is for my ZRX and is about a year old but new.

I'm sure everyone recognizes the next plug and its about two yrs old but new.

The next one I just bought two months ago and is for my 79 TT500.

The one on the far right I don't remember when I bought it.

All these NGK's were bought locally, I have the email addy of a NGK tech I contacted a month ago concerning some gapping questions I had so maybe he can shed some light on why I can get the screw off tipped plugs in my area and Dave can't, maybe it has something to do with old VS new stock.

Dave, I just re-read your post and now I thinking you are saying that the NGK's you are buying are screw off tipped but just don't come with the tip in the box, Bingo.

But the BP7ES's I just bought for my TT500 both came with the tips on them.

Heres something else to ponder, I have a couple NGK D8EA's that are re-packaged in a red Honda sleeve and were bought at a Honda dealer, they came with the tips.

I'm cornfused, maybe NGK sells the plugs with or without the tips on them by referring to the OEM plug wire setup to save a couple bucks but one plug can fit a hundred different applications, so I'm still cornfused.

Yes, I'm saying that none of the NGK D8EA plugs, nor the resister versions, I've bought from any number of sources (the last 12 being the local NAPA store), had the screw-on ADAPTORS (how's that?) for the tops. This has been true for many years.

Very interesting, I wonder why the re-packaged NGK D8EA's in the Honda sleeve I bought came with the tips on.

Like I mentioned before, I'll shoot an email off to the NGK rep and see if he can find something out, I'm also curious why certain model NGK's come with the tips on and some do not.

Hello Jason, I have a second question for you. I also belong to the biggest Honda CBX club in North America and was the tech director for many years, something came up the other day on the forum and I'm wondering if you can answer some questions?

The 79-82 CBX use NGK D8EA and in the past few years the plugs DO NOT come with the aluminum screw on tips (adapters) now with these bikes being over thirty yrs old a lot of owners have converted over to the newer style plug wires, Taylor as an example and they need the adapters to work on their CBX's, where is a source to buy these screw on tips?

Another question is why do some NGK's come with the adapters and others do not? I just bought some NGK BP7ES for my 79 TT500 and they came with the adapters on them, I also bought some D8EA a while back for my CBX that were re-packaged in the red Honda sleeve from a Honda dealer and they also had the screw on tips but this doesn't always seem to be the case with the NGK packaged D8EA.

This is a topic being discussed on the CBX forum and any help would be appreciated.

NGK.com would sell these, we provide them where they were OE and needed only, when people upgrade ignitions such as you are doing, or covert to pencil coils sometimes there are options, sometimes there are not unfortunately.

I bought D8EA and DR8ES-L plugs from the local NGK distributor and needed the screw caps for my Accel wires.
The distributor guy said the same thing - the majority of OEM applications don't use them. He said BMW autos and small engine/lawnmower shops use plugs that generally need the caps.
They did sell me the separate NGK PLUG TERMINAL, p/n NDE 067606-0051 @ $0.25 ea.
