CBX1000Z chain and sprockets

Hi

I have just bought a 1978 CBX in need of a refresh, so have joined the gradaddy of forums I am based in the UK, Surrey to be exact.

There is a vibration coming from the rear of the bike which I think is the chain as it "clicks" over the sprockets when turned by hand.

It's got the original 630 chain, but later models had a 530 probably to reduce the mass flying around back there. When I had my Laverda triple, it was common to swap the 630 for a 530 setup to improve the gearchange. The CBX doesn't suffer with that, but is it still a good move?

If so, do I just fit an A/B or pro-link setup?

Any advise most appreciated.

Yes, go to the 530 set-up. The '80 set up is exactly what you need. Might even shop around for the damping system for the front sprocket. It's a 3-piece affair that is supposed to quiet the chain as it makes it's way 'round the front sprocket.

Thanks for the welcome messages guys.

I will be needing lots more help as I progress through the re-fresh.

The bike is roadworthy, just tatty all round so will need new parts and an engine re-paint just to do justice to it. I will be getting it re-painted in the original red and this will make the rest of it look even tattier.....

My wish list so far:
Right hand switch assembly - threads stripped and bolts go right through with nuts on the underside.........
MPH speedo or just the face decal
Footrest rubbers
Seat cover & trims - my kids are getting this for my birthday next week
Fork legs as chrome is flaking around the headlight area - will the thicker ones from a later bike fit?
Tailpiece as mine is cracked - expensive on eBay so will attempt a repair.

Glen,

A few comments:
- For the paintwork, I use Dream Machine (Nottingham), they have done a few sets for me now (both Silver and Red) and are very good. It costs around £750 per set (mudguard, tank, tail piece and side panels), but will probably fix the tail piece within that.
- For the footrest rubbers, Wim (on the site) has had some exact replicas manufactured. Search the site, you should find a thread on it with a contact. If all else fails, PM me, and I'll send you his email address.
- For the switchgear, for UK / euro bikes they are NLA and don't know of any replicas being made (Falldownphil on the site has replicas available for US bikes). I may have a used one, let me know if you are interested and I'll see what I have.
- for the mph speedo, you can get a "stick on" replacement face from a UK seller on ebay, or Digitalpizza (Pete Rose) sells complete replica face plates as a set (clock, tacho, voltmeter)
- for the forks, I believe you can use later forks if you swap the triple tree / forks.
