Carb Install
I've tried a search several times but cannot find the answer. Late model carbs and using the 81-82 carb rubber insulators with a late model air box. What i cannot find in the correct orientation on the carb insulators, from memory reading a post somewhere I thought the notch goes up on the insulators. I cannot get the carbs installed, just not matching up to install on the one side or the other. I'm using the insulators from Randykks as when I tried to order OEM from Service Honda they emailed back and said not available. Although Partzilla says 2-3 days on their website but I did not want to wait more and maybe get a email saying not available.
So correct orientation of the notch ?? If it's up then why so much difficulty? I've installed carbs multiple time before on early model, no where near this difficult.

Could it be the insulators from Randakk are for the '79/'80?
Indeed the marking notch should be "up" on the Prolink insulators.

Thanks Steve for the reply, I definitely have the 81-82 insulators, they are wedge shape and I have the notch on the top side centered. Just needed confirmation before I try again tomorrow. It beat me today ! LOL !!!!!

The mark on the insulator should definitely be at 12;00 o'clock

If the notch is not conclusive, the narrow side of the insulator has to be on the bottom. The 81/82 Airbox inlet sits lower, the insulators are shaped to connect to this.

I always check the alignment to each other by placing a straightedge across the parting lines (left there from the mold), rotate if necessary.

New rubbers are great in that the rubber is soft and pliable, the issue you are running into is the down side of new rubbers - they have no 'memory'. Even so, heating the rubbers and lubing them should allow pretty easy install of the carbs.

I've posted these before but, here they are again.
I use a soft ratchet strap and just a light smear of vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the boots and they'll go in smooth.
One person operation.

So I checked once again that the carb boots where line up with the notch in the 12 O'clock position and proceeded to try to get them on, with a little silicone grease and and a lot of wiggling I was able to get them installed. Way more effort than any other carb install I've done. Now I just hope I will not have any air leaks

I used JR method and they are now piece of cake :)

Yes, the ratchet strap system worked great for me, the seven [yes 7] times I pulled my carbs thinking I had a fuel problem when in fact it was a rotten ignitor...new ignitor, no more carb problems...
Funny how that works.....

It is funny how that works. And, how many times have we seen eventual carb work fix ignition problems.
