Can anyone throw some light regarding Honda P/N 31511-107-300, described as Rubber, Battery Cushion.
It is a 9.5 cm X 5 cm piece of soft self adhesive rubber, and I happen to have one.
Despite looking at the usually very descriptive parts catalogue for my Z, I cannot make where exactly where it goes and how
A pic by anyone in the know would help me a lot.

What makes you think it is a CBX part, Aris? It actually is part of the 1970-1972 CB100 Supersport.
It is item No 11 in this schematic: It dampens the battery against the air cleaner housing.

I know it is a CBX part, because it is clearly stated (but not so clearly shown) in the Z parts catalogue, Section N4 F-30 'Frame body - Oil cooler'.
As it does not have a -422- number, it is also used elsewhere as you have so graphically shown us with item 11 above!

Yes, indeed it is shown in this section as item number 3 and it looks like it is located under the "backbone" of the frame. Maybe it is glued to one of the frame tubes to prevent something rubbing against it.
I will check my bike tonight to see if I can find it.

I just walked over to my '80 which is parked here in partially disassembled stage and saw that one of the clamps that hold the main wiring harness to the backbone tube does have a similar, thin rubber piece wrapped inside it to prevent the harness rubbing against the tube frame. Assuming that the bike is still in original condition in that area, that may be it.

OK, suddenly this makes a lot of sense
What confused and misled me before was the description of the part; 'Rubber, Battery Cushion'. This was obviously carried over from its original use, possibly the CB100 as suggested.
In the case of the Z, it has nothing to do with the battery, instead it is used as padding under the frame backbone, protecting the wiring harness against it.

Interesting thing is, my early CBX-Z parts catalog (hardcopy) that came with my bike, dated 1978, does not have the part. All later microfiches and the CBX 81/82 parts catalog dated 1984 have it. Honda must have recognized a problem and added the part later.

It appears they did so by just grabbing something out of the parts bin as opposed to designing something specific for it

And a picture is worth a thousand words. I believe this is the part, still mounted 28 years later on my '82. I am not really sure what it is protecting against, but there it is.

This is definitely the correct part and I believe it's purpose is to protect the wiring harness where it splits in two going to the front of the bike.
As the handlebars turn right and left, there is some movement there and I guess Honda has come with this solution to relieve some of the inevitable wear.
Indeed I would guess the aluminium 'tie wrap' should be somewhat loose, to allow for slight movement of the harness there.

So here's a pic of the newly installed part on my Z! The piece of self adhesive rubber can be seen clearly at the top middle, with a cable tie over, it loosely holding the wiring harness where it splits into two.
