I originally posted this as a reply in another thread and, wasn't getting any responses so...
I've looked for the engine# on my '79 and, can't find it anywhere.
What do I have to remove (excluding clothing items), to locate it?
My VIN is CB1-2001211

It should be stamped on a horizontal pad directly behind the #6 cylinder (the rightmost cylinder as you sit on the bike).
But, your bike seems to be extremely early, and I'm no expert, so....

A flashlight and a dental mirror will help.
On the early '79 motors the # was buried on the block just underneath carb #4.

This was absolutely the only number I could find stamped anywhere on the engine.
It reads: HF-1 8402 or 7

It is on what is commonly called the primary housing. A part of the engine cases behind the clutch. Very difficyult to get to when engine is installed. As some European countries required verification of the engine number during annual inspections, Honda got into deep water and needed to relocate the engine number to a more accessible spot. This happened around engine number 17.... some on the 1979s.

This number is stamped right dead-center above and in front of the carbs.
Is that it?

No. The engine number follows the format CB1E-00000. Yours should be somewhere in the CB1E-01xxx range.

Your engine number should be somewhere in the 1500-1600 range. It should also be a smooth-stud engine. Clean the flat area well on the cases right under the airbox and behind the clutch cover. You will just be able to make it out.

That's higher than the ranges quoted. Is that something to be concerned about or, just a little curious?

No problem - my '79 is serial # 1917 and engine # is in the 2500 range (can't remember just now). The early ones were that far apart - we think Honda pulled a couple of hundred engines for spares, whatever.

This may shine some light on the missing engine #'s. I'm helping someone local to get his CBX going, he was a tech at one of the larger Honda dealerships back in the 70-80's (Gary Damis Honda). He said the bike shop sent him to a Honda training center in Camden NJ to learn how to work on the CBX and the new twin cam 750, the techs would be handed a disassembled CBX motor then they would re-assemble and test the motor, after one test they would then toss the blocks into the dumpster minus the carbs, starter and alt. (OUCH) I'm not sure these motors had serial #'s but I would assume they did knowing how anal Honda was/is.
