Fried Wires

Post by RIPPER »

Pulled the alternator on my 80 to check the brushes.Removed brushes from base checked and replaced same brushes.Replaced alternator and started bike.No volts and lots of smoke.Fried the wire from the connector back to one of the brushes and one wire from the regulator to each connector?Pulled the alternator and checked for pinched wire under the brushes everything looks fine?.Blew the main fuse but not before frying the 3 wires?.Can't figure out what went wrong?Any suggestions or ideas welcome.Any way to get the connector repaired with a new wire to the brushes? Don't think I hurt the stator as those wires look OK? Will need a new regulator for sure as wire is burned right to the regulator body.
Thanks RIPPER

Ripper,

If you need a new plastic connector for either side going to the alternator or the other side going back the the R/R if you want. There is a small bike shop here and he carries all of the connector ends for the import bikes. I did buy every connector from him for my 79.

So if you are in need let me know and I can find out how much for the connectors and pick them up and ship them out. I have pulled every wire out from their connector and cleaned them using my Dremal and the wire wheel that came with it to clean all of mine. I then fit them to make sure they were a tight fit, then coated then with a di-electric grease from Radio Shack before reinstalling them back into the connector. I did every connector even the ones from the switches behind the headlight.

Good Luck and leave me a message if you would like me to check on the connectors. Also if there is any questions on how to's I have been thru this problem and mine is fully repaired without cutting a wire, or splicing into any wire harness.

Ripper,

The regulator puts +12 volts directly to the brushes to energize the rotor (as you already know). The Reg. modifies the ground return to complete the circuit but a solid +12 is present on the Black lead. If the two wires got fried, then there HAS to be a direct short to ground from the BLACK wire from the Regulator! The only other thought is that the Rotor shorted - that would do the same thing (but that would stretch coincidence). I wouldn't replace the R/R until you know for sure it's gone - they can carry a lot of current before they blow. By the way, I'd like to buy your old brushes you replaced. Let me know what you find, I'd like to know what did it.
